Sorin Campan at Plan B

Galeria Plan BGaleria Plan B is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of the Romanian artist Sorin Campan (born 1940, lives and works in Cluj, Romania).

Among the long-term projects of Plan B, one strand of research and exhibition engages and seeks to revaluate a group of remarkable painters active in Romania between 1970–2000. We believe the works these artists produced can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the period when they were made, and that they have not lost any of their poignancy in the intervening years. These works visualize a double removal: they were made at a distance from the official artistic establishment of the ’70s and ’80s, and have not succumbed, like many of their contemporaries, to a mimetic rehearsal of international models after ’89. In the majority of cases, the paintings never left the studio, and were undervalued, both culturally and economically, after 1989. We are proposing them as possible landmarks in a yet-unwritten history of the Romanian art scene, but also as models of artistic and social behavior.

Sorin Campan “Ora si loc”

February 19 – March 13, 2010
Tuesday – Saturday, 16 – 20 h
Str. Henri Barbusse 59-61 . 400616 Cluj

Sorin Campan’s works achieve their appearance of simplicity via a series of detours and through a nuanced reflection on the insturments of painting. Their enigmatic articulation demands a patient reading: simple images like nocturnal landscapes or still lives with fruit are pretexts to localize mystery, to subject it to a kind of order, which does not coincide with its translation or explanation. Beyond the always surprising dosage of transparency and secrecy, the quality of the painting – the austerity of means and the often exuberant chromatics – make Campan a remarkable artist. From a handful of artists, less visible but whose art continues to address us, Sorin Campan stands apart not by the size or number of works, but by his genuine, calm investigation of and with the medium of painting.

Dar in ultima perioada am inceput sa am dubii.

Din cand in cand se aude incet o voce, daca are chef.

Pai cum sa-i dau cererea consulului?

AVAMAA – Mooste KulalisStuudio

AVAMAA is a 5 Day art symposium which includes: – artistic workshops and projects +1 Day final exhibition and “Honey for the Ears” live concert and performance evening. This year AVAMAA will be produced in cooperation with X-OP, a gradually growing network of artists, researchers, operators, producers and cultural institutions with the aim
to establish an European platform for the creation of art.
AVAMAA a multi-purpose, cross-discipline, mixed-media context-specific artistic and social event of creative interventions. AVAMAA encourages the exchange of ideas and the realization of short term artistic projects within a 6 day event. The concept of AVAMAA builds on the experiences of the previous MoKS symposium (known as PostsovkhoZ, that ran from 2001-2006), yet strives to adapt to the changing conditions in both the global and local context.

Mooste, Estonia (16-21. August, 2010) – Mooste KulalisStuudio (MoKS) AVAMAA – Multi-purpose, cross-discipline, mixed-media context-specific artistic and social event of creative interventions moks.ee/site/pmwiki.php

The current conditions of rural Estonia offer a number of possibilities, with its surplus of open space and need for new ideas and projects to stimulate local communities environments. Yet with these possibilities there is also a need for creative experimentation, critical analysis and discussion on issues regarding the development of artistic practices and new forms of public and private space.

What to expect… The 6 day event, taking experiences from previous MoKS events, attempts to instigate cooperative activities between the local community and the temporary international artistic community. MoKS events have always encouraged cooperation of Estonian artists, the local community in the village of Mooste and artists from abroad. Involvement will become real through the planned places of activity (village “central” square, farm buildings, open spaces) workshops and projects (ex. joint workshops with children or village theatre). AVAMAA challenges exclusionary culture through inclusive participation and challenges the role of the artist and their means and methods of creative expression.

The premise is to host workshops and projects that:

* Involve a certain number of the participants and/or people from the local community
* Relate to the context of Mooste either socially or environmentally (this can also be a prearranged site like the silo tower)
* contribute to the overall structure of the event (to make it more self-sustained). For general participants and volunteers this can include practical things like helping with cooking and cleaning.
* experiment with forms of artistic and social collaboration between the different elements of the event (workshop and project leaders, volunteers, guest participants, villagers etc.)

The dates for AVAMAA 2010 are August 16-21. For these dates MoKS covers food and accommodation and travel costs within Estonia for artists leading projects and workshops.

Proposals must include a clearly written concept and plan for implementation including any required materials of budget costs.

Upon acceptance MoKS can assist with necessary invitation letters for artists requesting supplementary funding.

The SocialEst Seminar – Call for papers

Proposals for papers and presentations are invited from art historians, curators and artists that examine the art and visual culture of Eastern Europe in both historical and contemporary contexts. The SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art will be held at the Courtauld Institute of Art on 23 October 2010.

The SocialEast Seminar on *Networks and Sociability in East European Art provides a forum for the presentation of new research into practices of informal exchange and patterns of alternative communication between experimental artists in the Eastern Bloc. This seminar explores the ways in which unauthorised artistic ideas were able to transgress national and ideological boundaries through networks of friendship and artistic collaboration that flew in the face of an official culture of isolationism, censorship and political control. It focuses on processes of artistic exchange that took shape at a grass-roots level, inventive strategies to surmount bureaucratic obstacles, and the specific meaning
of ‘networking’ in the context of communist Eastern Europe. The seminar also considers the degree to which state-sponsored artistic events, held for Cold War propaganda reasons, could become spaces for unofficial exchange, the roles available to exiled artists and intellectuals in facilitating international communication, collaboration and the
circulation of materials, as well as the contribution of curators and intellectuals from the far side of the Iron Curtain in creating informal networks.

The SocialEast Forum is a platform for innovative, transnational research on the art and visual culture of Eastern Europe initiated by Dr. Reuben Fowkes in 2006. Based on active collaboration with institutes of art history across Europe and the involvement of prominent academics, curators and artists, SocialEast has become an internationally-recognised generator of pioneering research into the art history of Eastern Europe during the Cold War. This second
SocialEast Seminar at the Courtauld Institute follows on from the SocialEast Seminar on Art and Espionage held in February 2009 and co-organised with Dr. Sarah Wilson. Previous SocialEast Seminars have dealt with issues of Foreign Experience, Art and Ideology, Art and Documentary, Art and Revolution, Art and Memory, Art and Empire and the
Legacy of 1968 and were held at Manchester Art Gallery, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art Budapest, Krakow University, and Mimara Museum Zagreb.

The SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art is organised in collaboration with Dr. Klara Kemp-Welch of the Courtauld Institute as part of a three year Leverhulme Trust funded project entitled Festivals and Friendships: Networking the Soviet ‘Bloc’, examining unofficial exchange between artists from East-Central Europe
and former Yugoslavia in the 1960s and 1970s. The seminar is supported by the Leverhulme Trust and the Courtauld Institute Research Forum.

To propose a paper for the SocialEast Seminar on Networks and Sociability in East European Art, please send a 200 word proposal and biographical note to info(at)socialeast.org.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is Monday 15 March 2010.
