Artist Talk: Martin Krenn “Films on art and activism”

PavilionBorn in 1970, in Vienna, Martin Krenn attends the University of Applied Arts and the Conservatory. He is particularly interested in art in public space and multimedia art, his work focusing on questions regarding the civil society and its confrontation with recent history. Krenn also teaches at the University of Art in Vienna.

Martin Krenn’s movies are situated at the border between documentary, participation and political action.

“In Between the Movements”, his latest video series, started in 2007, focuses on the global relational phenomenon and its impact on the theory and practice of leftwing resistance. Its goal is neither to offer a complete picture on the “anti-globalization” movements, nor to deliver prefabricated concepts on the configuring of an “alternative world”, but to debate concrete questions, at the crossroads of major global projects. For instance, the possibilities and the difficulties that arise in communicating with groups of different backgrounds are discussed.

Conversations led with different protagonists are the starting point of films created in collaboration with them. All the participants were invited to influence the creation of the film, both in the filming as well as the editing process. Cooperation with the films’ subjects, coming from different geographical and activist contexts, enable the discovering of different perspectives on opposition and represent an example of production of collaborative knowledge.

“Notes on opposition” (2006) is a documentary film on the resistance movement against fascism in the ’30s and ’40s in Austria, France and Spain. The main character is the Austrian Harry Spiegel, that fought in Spain in the ’30s alongside the republicans that opposed Franco. Adopting the method of recreating old photographs and film sequences, the documentary tries to focus on filmic representation and the transmission of history.

The photographic series and the short film “Tirana Tours” (2007) discuss a communist photography album, edited in 1990 in Tirana, in four languages. Seventeen years later, Martin Krenn took pictures of the locations shot in the album. An interview with the photographer of the original images, Petrit Kumi, completes the photographic series. The theme of the project are the rhetorical and ideological image mechanisms and the way they continue to influence the present.

Martin Krenn will be present at the screening of the film fragments mentioned above and will be available for a questions and answers series.

Concrete Geometries: Spatial Form in Social and Aesthetic Processes

The ‘Concrete Geometeries’ Research Cluster at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London is seeking submissions of work from the fields of art, architecture, sciences and humanities that explore the intimate relationship between between spatial form and human processes – be they social or aesthetic – and the variety of new material entities this relationship might provoke.

The past decade has seen a revolution in design and fabrication tools. Digital design methods for form finding and implementing have produced an influential body of work, preoccupied with the development of novel, complex and heterogeneous spatial form.

This form, simply referred to as ‘geometry’, is often evaluated in relation to its environmental and structural performance. Yet, the emergence of new spatial forms, bear significance beyond advances in technology but in relation to what they offer to the human condition in terms of aesthetic and social processes.

The call wishes to address such questions as:

How is spatial form socially and experientially relevant?
How does it choreograph human processes?
Can it stimulate emotional or behavioral responses or create particular aesthetic experiences?
Can social cultures be pattered through formal configurations of space?
How can the articulation of a space support acts of inhabitation, appropriation or other types of direct engagement?
How do we perceive space visually and bodily?
What social or aesthetic consequences does the formal articulation of space have for our everyday lives and the production of reality?
What kind of associations emerge between spatial form and social actors?

10 Projects and 10 Texts will be selected by the curatorial board for inclusion in an exhibition, symposium and publication at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in 2010.

New Europe Festival & Jarmila Jerabkova Award

The New Europe Festival will present contemporary dance and dance theatre performances over the course of five festive evenings. These dance projects originated in countries which we have titled NEW EUROPE, knowing
it to be a little exaggerative. These are in fact those countries that have either recently joined the European Union or which are leading discussions on joining the EU.

International Contemporary Dance and Dance Theatre Festival and Jarmila Jerabkova Award 2010 will take place at Duncan Centre Theatre, Prague (25 – 29 November 2010)

During the Festival, selected choreographers under the age of thirty-five will present their dance projects, which are enhanced by new choreography and which have been created for the New Europe Festival based on classical music composed by Czech composer Jiri Teml.

An international board will select three dance projects (during the Festival) and these will be awarded the Jarmila Jerabkova Award.

ZIDUL – CRESCAND IN SPATELE CORTINEI DE FIER / lansarea cartii in limba romana / 24 februarie / 17h00 / Centrul Ceh

Expozitia are loc la UNAgaleria (Str.

A aparut in limba engleza (The Wall), la New York, in toamna lui 2007 si a cucerit imediat atentia criticii si a cititorilor.

Trecutul nostru ramane insa in noi si continua sa fie viu.
