Admission free. Gallery opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 10.00-18.00; Wednesdays late 10.00-21.00.Closed Mondays and Bank Holidays.

Camden Arts Centre presents an astonishing installation by Romanian artist Mircea Cantor. In ‘The Need for Uncertainty’ (2008), two peacocks inhabit a series of large golden cages. As in his film ‘Deeparture’, shown at the Berlin Biennial in 2005, which depicted a wolf and a deer circling each other, Cantor sets up a physically and psychologically unsettling situation for the viewer. Here the birds’ muted steps demand that distance be kept by the viewer, as these elegant birds – the symbol of love, luck and watchfulness from Christianity to Hinduism, transfix and silence us.

Cantor elaborates on the theme of uncertainty, prompting reflections on worlds within worlds, and on freedom and its limitation. Cantor’s video and mixed media installations address the notion of displacement and co-existent worlds. Beyond the suspense, Cantor discreetly evokes the uneasy confrontation of ideology, people and culture.  In ‘Airplanes and Angels’ (2008), a flying carpet, woven using a traditional Romanian technique, shows motifs of angels and aeroplanes; in Hiatus (2008) a mysterious, geometric lattice of carved wood is wrapped around a tree in the middle of a forest.

Cantor’s sculptural and installation work reveals the power of the simple gesture to prompt reflection on the fragility of our convictions. In the UK premiere of Chaplet (2007), he uses the imprint of his ink-soaked fingerprints pressed directly onto a wall, creating a poignant rosary of barbed wire, both imaginary yet very real in its enclosure.

“Cantor’s poetic use of materials, images, animals and places offers an eloquent meditation on the contradictions of our contemporary world and the human condition. His work has a beauty and immediacy that resonates long after the encounter.” - Suzanne Cotter, Curator

This is the first of three artists’ commissions in this ambitious series produced in collaboration with Arnolfini, Bristol and Modern Art Oxford. The next commission in the series is by Johanna Billing, showing at Camden Arts Centre 10 July – 13 September 2009.
Camden Arts Centre is a venue for contemporary visual art and education, where ideas are made visible and people of all ages and abilities can engage in the creative process of making art.  Our pioneering and varied programme of artist-led courses and other education activities has gained an international reputation as a model of good practice. We are known as a forward-thinking organisation where artists and others can see, make and talk about art.

Mircea Cantor was born in 1977 in Oradea, Romania. He lives and works in Paris and Cluj, Romania.Mircea has had a recent solo exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (2007) and the Museum Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Panoramica, Mexico, D.F. (2007). He has exhibited widely in Europe and the USA. In 2004 Mircea Cantor was awarded the Prix Paul Ricard S.A. He is a co-founder and co-editor of the cultural review Version (www.versionmagazine.com) founded in 2001 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

‘The Need for Uncertainty’ was seen previously at Modern Art Oxford (2 April – 1 June 2008), Arnolfini Bristol (13 September – 9 November 2008), as part of the ‘3: 3 artists/3 spaces/3 years’ series, a collaboration between Modern Art Oxford, Arnolfini, and Camden Arts Centre, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

Oscar nominated “Slumdog Millionaire”, Addictive TV remix + online competition

Just a quickie update… audio/video remix artists Addictive TV are partnering the French music and digital arts festival Tilt to launch an online video mash-up competition in collaboration with curators Cinefeel.org. The winning entry receives $1000. Details below…

Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire has just been nominated for 10 Oscars – including Best Director and Best Film. So even more congrats are in order to the man himself! If you’re writing stories about this news, please feel free to link to Addictive TV’s official Slumdog Millionaire remix-trailer which was commissioned by the film’s distributors, after Danny Boyle saw Addictive TV’s other film remix work.

OSCAR NOMINATED ‘SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’ REMIXED BY ADDICTIVE TV

With video sharing sites like Youtube and DailyMotion now the norm, remixers everywhere are busy mashing-up film clips, movie-trailers and music videos and posting them for the world to see. And hot on the heels of Addictive TV’s Slumdog Millionaire remix, French music and digital arts festival Tilt are launching their own online film remix competition in collaboration with curators Cinefeel.org and
artists Addictive TV, who’ll also be part of the judging panel. The winner receives $1000! For deadlines, and more information on what to mash-up, how to participate and to get links to some public domain film archives, please visit: http://www.tilt-festival.org

Slumdog Millionaire has been nominated for 10 Oscars to sit with its 11 BAFTA nominations! Meanwhile, Addictive TV’s Slumdog Millionaire remix is virally going from strength to strength, spreading far and wide, finding itself reported on, posted, and blogged on countless sites across the web, including the homepage of MSN and the Oscars film awards site awardsdaily.com

Impressed by their remix work for the Hollywood studios, the film’s distributors and director Danny Boyle asked audiovisual artists Addictive TV to create an alternative web trailer for Slumdog Millionaire, by sampling sounds and images from throughout the entire film and producing something entirely new made from those samples. “Next level shit” is how Grandmaster Flash so eloquently described just what Addictive TV do when they supported the great man in San Francisco. As aside from their film remix work, Addictive TV perform at festivals all over the planet; from Japan to Brazil, China to Kuwait, the duo have blown away audiences in nearly 50 countries now, even Moby described them as ‘a tough act to follow’ when they supported him at the opening event of SXSW 2008 in Austin, Texas.

In 2006 Addictive TV became the first artists to officially remix a Hollywood studio movie when they created the award-winning web viral for New Line Cinema’s “Take the Lead” starring Antonio Banderas, and in 2008 became the first group to ever remix the Olympics live for television, when they took part in a major EU funded and IOC sanctioned project looking at new forms of television.

Slumdog Millionaire remix…

“Addictive TV have become the go-to guys for these new viral trailers” Mixmag

“Now the awards magnet that is Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has gone under their [Addictive TV's] knife, it’s not hard to see why the movie remix has proved an effective trick – they don’t ruin the story, and yet you spend more time watching it than a trailer.” The Vine

“If you thought Slumdog was an energetic and fun film before (one of the best of the year, mind you), you’ll be surprised to see that it gets better in the hands of the Addictive TV team.” Filmschoolrejects.com

“We’ve got a little tastemaker in the form of an absolutely EVIL remix of the movie for both fans as those eager to see what’s around the corner. A movie remix? Indeed, and a very special one too. None other than Addictive TV have been asked by Danny Boyle himself to create an alternative web trailer for Slumdog Millionaire by using sample sounds and images. The result is a stunning audiovisual piece of art…”
