Human Rights Watch seeks nominees for Hellman/Hammett grants

Human Rights Watch administers the Hellman/Hammett grant program for writers all around the world who have been victims of political persecution and are in financial need. The grants are named for the late American playwright Lillian Hellman and her longtime companion, the novelist Dashiell Hammett. Both were questioned by US congressional committees about their political beliefs and affiliations during the aggressive anti-communist investigations inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s. Hellman suffered professionally and had trouble finding work. Hammett spent time in prison.

In 1989, the trustees appointed in Hellman’s will asked Human Rights Watch to devise a program to help writers who were targeted for expressing views that their governments oppose, for criticizing government officials or actions, or for writing about subjects that their governments did not want reported.  Over the past 22 years, more than 700 writers from 92 countries have received Hellman/Hammett grants of up to US$10,000 each, totaling more than $3 million. The program also gives small emergency grants to writers who have an urgent need to leave their country or who need immediate medical treatment after serving prison terms or enduring torture.

United States of Europe – A travelling exhibition about European identity and today’s Europe

United States of Europe (U.S.E) will be presented in public spaces, galleries and museums in Poland, Finland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Portugal, Cyprus, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland till spring 2013.

In the exhibition, art works (videos, photos, installations) are confronted with interviews from a sociological study. A multimedia laboratory – being an artwork in itself – combines documentary with artistic dimension and constitutes the heart of the exhibition. A complementary series of debates will discuss and reflect upon political, social and cultural aspects of Europe.

Curators: Ryszard W. Kluszczynski (Poland), Anna Bitkina (Russia), Sinziana Ravini, (Sweden/France) Johanna Suo (Sweden/France/UK) has initiated the project and created the exhibition concept.

Impakt Works: Call For Residencies

Impakt Works residencies take place at Impakt in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The call is open to international artists and artists from the Netherlands. Each residency period lasts two months, from November 2011 onwards. Projects that can start already in November have priority. The residency includes: accommodation, a studio, basic technical facilities and
equipment and reimbursement of traveling expenses up to 250 euro. Artists in residence may receive a “per-diem” stipend not exceeding 1000 euro in the two-month period.

Critical Information is an interdisciplinary graduate student conference, which provides a platform to assess current scholarship and research at the intersection of art, media, and society. Critical Information is particularly interested in engaging papers or projects that address the following issues: Art and Social Theory, Media and Memory, the History and Future of the Image, Mediated Image Making, Identity and Representation in the Mediated Environment, Philosophy and Media, the Work of Art in the Information Age, and more. All themes pertaining to the juncture of media, theory, and the visual arts will be considered.

Mona Mur & En Esc and Tanz Ohne Musik, in Bucharest

Control Club (19, Academiei St.) will host on Thursday, the 7th of April, a unique event in Romania: Candy Affair Party, whose guests of honor are the distinguished international artists – Mona Mur & En Esch. The party starter will be Dan Serbanescu’s side-project, Tanz Ohne Musik.

The music of the German duo Mona Mur & En Esch can be briefly described as “strange and scary rock’n'roll dark cabaret” to quote the British webzine Nemesis to Go. They manage to shape a provocative mix between Marlene Dietrich and Black Sabbath. Their sound tells apart through the brutal and metallic guitar riffs of En Esch (formerly KMFDM), blended with the sensual, yet forceful voice of Mona Mur. These elements, along with the theatricalism of the two artists’ show, induce a particular experience.

This cocktail of peculiar sensations is induced to the public after an experimental ingredient known by the public as Tanz Ohne Musik, completed by the minimal video projections of Vali Chincisan.

Candy Affair Party, above all else, wishes to entice all your senses by offering you a diversity of lollipops and chocolates.

Surprises don’t end here: you will receive a number at the entrance, which signs you up for the contest with prizes in CDs and T-shirts. The raffle takes place at 00:00 and the ticket can bring you one of the following prizes:

Through this competition we invite students to give a contribution on the benefits of language learning, the value of speaking several languages and the richness of intercultural exchanges, using the language of the arts.

We are looking for proposals for new audiovisual productions that are innovative, witty, creative, unexpected, motivating and that explore the potential of multilingualism and the challenges it creates. The proposals should deliver a clear message, be self-explanatory and easily understandable to a broad public with different backgrounds and mother tongues.

European student competition – Multilingual Europe in Focus

Call for Proposals for the production of new audiovisual productions (minimum 60 – maximum 90 seconds) promoting multilingualism in Europe.

What kind of proposals are we looking for?
The European Union has a strategy on multilingualism with a focus on cultural diversity, based on the motto ‘United in Diversity’. Linguistic diversity and intercultural exchanges enrich as well as complicate our societies. Through this competition we invite students to give a contribution on the benefits of language learning, the value of speaking several
languages and the richness of intercultural exchanges, using the language of the arts.

Who are the organisers?
ELIA – European League of Institutes of the Arts – in cooperation with CILECT- International Association of Film and Television Schools – is organising this competition on behalf of the European Commission and in partnership with PRIX EUROPA.

Who can apply?
Applications will be accepted from students in their third, fourth or fifth year of study at ELIA and CILECT member institutions in the 27 European Union Member States and in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Turkey.

* The finalised audiovisual productions will be presented during the PRIX EUROPA Festival in Berlin (22 to 29 October 2011) where the PRIX EUROPA Prize for “Best Video on Multilingualism of the Year 2011″ will be awarded. Travel and hotel costs will be covered for two persons per selected project.
* A DVD of the audiovisual productions will be produced and widely distributed to television stations and festivals.

Call for Participation: Black Shorts Film Workshop Georgia

We are searching for 20 participants to create experimental films at a 12-day research workshop in Georgia around the theme of BLACK. Unwearable, but hopefully not unbearable, these BLACK SHORTS will then be editing during a second workshop in Budapest before been screened in cinemas and published online. Previous experience in filmmaking is welcome but not necessary, just an inquisitive mind, an eagerness to learn and a willingness to collaborate. Do you want to spread rumours of everyday life in Georgia? Then read below to find out more.

So what exactly does the BLACK SHORTS project consist of?

1. A 12-day training, research and filming workshop in Georgia with 20 young people from across Europe (May 10th – May 22nd 2011).
2. A 4-day video editing workshop in Hungary (June 5th – 9th 2011).
3. Public premiers of the finished films at downtown cinemas in Budapest, Tbilisi and Berlin (June).
4. The distribution of the finished films online, at film festivals and via DVD.

Why Georgia? Why Black? We are aware that blackness in Georgia can invoke the past. It might be associated with the dark 90′s – with armed street gangs, bullies and cleptocracy. Or that black could also refer blackouts that plagued Georgia throughout the 90s and early 2000s, or the caravans of black BMWs and Mercedes owned by the wealthy and the ruling class. If this is black, then maybe the Revolution of Roses in 2003 was meant to signal the start of a colourful future? That it was in part about the suppression of the black-side of Georgian society? A top-down and coloured modernisation that has physically manifested itself through colourful street repainting, gentrification and upbeat styles? Of course, we might be taking black a bit too far – its roots lie in everyday life. After all, if you asked most foreigners to think of black in Georgia then it would be the Black Sea that springs to mind, whilst for many Georgians it’s another sea of black they see on a day-to-day basis – the sea of black clothing in which most people clad themselves.
Thus black is both a colour of everyday life and a colour full of symbolic tension – a tension that can be artistically exploited. Turning black on its head, we want to use the colour to shed light on stories of everyday life in Georgia. Whilst the topic of black can be broad, what unites the possible film-topics is the colour’s underlying subversiveness, outsiderness and supposed legitimisation of all that is ‘white’, legal and proper. We feel ill at ease with both the bright promises of modernity, as well as the dark undertones of local-based resistance. Instead, we care for smaller stories of everydayness that are (dis)coloured – symbolically or physically. Intrigued and inspired, we want to slip under state-based radars to bring black rumours of everyday life.

Give me more details! What will happen at the workshops? During the first two days of the filming workshop in Georgia, you will be trained in the basic camera and sound techniquesand be given an introduction into how to develop a story within a film. We will also form five teams of filmmakers, based on research interest, film skills and local language ability. Within the team you will develop your common idea for a film with an expert tutor. The teams will then have a little over a week to film their chosen topic. The final days of this first workshop will be for reviewing footage and deciding upon how your final film will look. During the editing workshop in Budapest, you will (having solved conceptual, thematic etc. issues in Georgia and via email) make the final edit of your film. On the final day we will screen the films in a downtown cinema in Budapest.

Who are you? We are the central and eastern European magazine Plotki, the Georgian documentary film company Sakdoc Film and the Centre for Arts and Culture at the Central European University in Budapest.

Who am I? If you’re under 35, creative, willing to learn, inquisitive and speak good enough English to work in a multi-national team, then we’d love you to apply. Though local language ability is an advantage, you don’t have to speak Georgian or Russian as each team will have one Georgian/Russian speaking participant. Though previous filmmaking experience is not necessary, we encourage filmmakers to apply (though you should have realistic expectations and be willing to work with those who are less experienced). We will select participants based on their profile and the proposed film idea (see application form below). Whilst we would like to cover all participants’ travel costs, if you live outside Europe then it’s unlikely that we will be able to fund the full amount due to budget limitations.

How much will this cost me? What will I get in return? If you’re living in Georgia the participation cost is 10EUR, if you’re not from Georgia the cost is 120EUR (to reflect the differing travel-costs). In return you’ll get travel to and from the Georgian workshop, living expenses in Georgia, travel to and from the Hungarian workshop and living expenses in Hungary. You’ll also get training sessions on using film equipment, conceptualising documentary films and editing films. Finally, and most importantly, you’ll get the chance to design, plan, shoot and edit a short film as part of a multi-national team.

What type of film do you expect? We are looking for short (average 15mins) experimental film on the theme of black in Georgia.

Creation

-the how: How will you access the people/places/groups? How will you film
it?
(Please note that if you’re accepted, you may not be able to make the film
idea on which you’re accepted. You will work in a team of 3-4 people, thus
collaboration and negotiation will take place).
