Niels Van Tomme “Aporia curatoriatului”

In loc de a asambla concepte cu precizie si competenta curatoriala, ce anume ar rezulta din introducerea indoielii si ezitarii ca principii de baza ale realizarii unei expozitii? Ce tip de cunoastere poate fi dobandit dintr-o asemenea pozitie curatoriala dubitativa? Inseamna oare ca expozitia se va narui in sine sau exista cumva alte modalitati de asamblare si traire a expozitiei care pot fi atinse?

Niels Van Tomme este un curator, cercetator si critic de arta stabilit in New York. Cea mai recenta expozitie curatoriata de Van Tomme este “Where Do We Migrate To?”, inaugurata la Centrul pentru Arta, Design si Cultura Vizuala din Baltimore si care va fi itinerata la New Parsons School of Design din New York, CAC in New Orleans, si la Centrul Rubin de Arte Vizuale din El Paso. El este editor colaborator al Art Papers si publica in periodice, reviste si cataloage expozitionale internationale. Van Tomme este in prezent coeditor al cartii intitulate “Aestheic Justice” (Justitia Estetica), care va aparea in Colectia Antennae, publicata de Valiz, Amsterdam, in 2012.

Pavilion: “Histeria – Historia” Alex Brahim

O discutie despre artisti, scriitori, regizori care au indraznit sa spuna adevarul, in deosebi in timpuri agitate. In mod special acum, cand suntem mintiti, manipulati de propaganda, distrati de abundenta de gadget-uri, inundati de cultura pop lipsita de sens si fortati sa ne simtim impotenti in timp ce suntem coplesiti de starea de colaps global. Lucrari si artisti care inspira indivizii sa inainteze inspre arta ca mijloc de protest, isi ofera propria voce istoriei, ilustrand frica, furia si mahnirea specifice conditiei umane in aceste vremuri de incercare.
Alex Brahim este un curator si teoretician independent din Columbia. Traieste si lucreaza in Barcelona.

“Just do it. Biopolitical Branding” la Pavilion

Orasul se prezinta ca o jungla semiotica, saturata de logo-uri care iti directioneaza calea prin utilizarea „soft power” (puterea de convingere si manipulare). Nemaifiind constrans sa se conformeze unor valori fixe, cetateanul devenit consumator este incurajat sa-si manifeste identitatea prin consum. Dar cum pot logo-urile sau simbolurile sa exercite o asemenea influenta si mai important, ar trebui sa acceptam aceasta influenta ca fiind complet pozitiva? Pentru a raspunde acestor intrebari si a analiza mecanismele prin care corporatiile si omniprezentul fenomen al branding-ului modeleaza imaginarul social, artistii si cercetatorii utilizeaza diverse strategii de apropriere sau rezistenta. De la analiza identitatii vizuale a celor de la Metahaven pana la critica publicitatii realizata de grupul Freee, aceasta expozitie incearca sa joace rolul unui instrument pentru a opera intr-un mediu neo-liberal. Departe de a fi o manifestare vizuala a activismului anti-corporatist, lucrarile prezentate oscileaza intre protest si supra-identificare, angajand vizitatorul intr-o multitudine de discursuri.

Karl Zechenter “Frontiers, un joc pentru schimbare sociala”

“Revolutia nu va fi televizata, in schimb va veni cu un game pad” – Jocul pe computer Frontiers, produs de grupul austriac gold extra, ofera jucatorilor posibilitatea de a experimenta zone de frontiera ale Europei, jucand rolul refugiatilor sau al granicerilor. Jocul ofera o noua perspectiva printr-un context artistic: Frontiers modifica genul de joc shooter si ii lasa pe jucatori sa puna sub semnul intrebarii nivelul de realitate pe care si-l pot permite in cadrul unui joc pe computer.
Plasat cu un scop intre functionalitatea jocurilor si abordarea artistica, Frontiers este prezentat in cadrul unei expozitii permanente in centrul ZKM din Karlsruhe. Unul dintre producatorii jocului, Karl Zechenter, va vorbi in conferinta sa despre cercetarea si dezvoltarea jocului, contextul jocurilor politice si tehnicile de modificare hardware si software vizibile in Frontiers.

Karl Zechenter “Frontiers as a Game for Social Change”

“The revolution will not be televised – instead it’ll come with a game pad” – The computer-game Frontiers by the Austrian artist group gold extra lets its players experience European border zones performing the roles of refugees or border guards respectively. The game allows for a new perspective in an artistic and gaming context: Frontiers modifies the shooter-genre and lets its players face the question just how much reality they can afford within a computer-game. Purposefully put between the functionality of games and the approach of fine arts, Frontiers is presented e.g. in the permanent exhibition at ZKM Karlsruhe. One of the producers of the game, Karl Zechenter, speaks in his lecture about researching and developping the game, the context of political games and the techniques of modding as seen in Frontiers.

“Intelectualii si politica” – Dezbatere intre Vasile Ernu, Ciprian Sulea si Costi Rogozanu

Criza economica a facut foarte vizibile doua alte crize care erau la fel de grave si inainte, dar care, din cauza entuziasmelor grabite si a valurilor de bani aleatoare, erau trecute cu vederea: criza politica si criza spatiului public intelectual.
De ce exista atit de putina autonomie a spatiului public intelectual? De ce este el atit de irelevant pentru politic? Cum se pozitioneaza unii fata de altii intelectualii si oamenii politici? Ce sanse avem sa schimbam paradigma asocierii traditionale strinse a intelectualilor cu statul? Cata ruptura si cita continuitate exista, din acest punct de vedere, intre comunism si post-comunism?
Citeva intrebari la care nu exista multe raspunsuri…

Vasile Ernu este nascut in URSS in 1971. Este absolvent al Facultatii de Filosofie (Universitatea Al.I.Cuza, Iasi, 1996) si al masterului de Filosofie (Universitatea Babes-Bolyai, Cluj, 1997). A fost redactor fondator al revistei Philosophy&Stuff si redactor asociat al revistei Idea arta+societate. A debutat cu volumul “Nascut in URSS” (Polirom 2006, 2007, 2010) care a fost tradus in mai multe limbi. In 2009 publica la ed. Polirom volumul “Ultimii eretici ai Imperiului”. Alaturi de C. Rogozanu, C. Siulea si O. Tichindeleanu este coordonatorul volumului Iluzia anticomunismului, ed. Cartier 2008. In ultimii ani a tinut rubrici in Romania Libera, HotNews, Noua Literatura, Suplimentul de Cultura si Observator Cultural.

Ciprian Siulea este nascut in 1969 la Brasov. Profesor de stiinte socio-umane in perioada 1995-1999, ziarist intre 2004 si 2008, in prezent traducator. Autor al volumului Retori, simulacre, imposturi (Compania, 2003).

Costi Rogozanu s-a nascut in 1977. A absolvit Liceul „Unirea” din Focsani, specializarea informatica. A urmat cursurile Facultatii de Litere din cadrul Universitatii Bucuresti. I-au aparut la Editura Polirom volumul de critica “Agresiuni, digresiuni” (2006) si culegerea de proza scurta “Fuck the cool. Spune-mi o poveste” (2007). A coordonat impreuna cu Siulea, Ernu si Tichindeleanu antologia “Iluzia anticomunismului”, aparuta la Editura Cartier.

“Arta si revolutie. De la reprezentare la constructia de situatii” – Razvan Ion

G. W. F. Hegel a preluat conceptul de situatie din discursul teatrului de secol XVIII si l-a introdus in “Prelegeri de estetica” (tinute pentru prima data in 1818 in Heidelberg, apoi dezvoltate in Berlin de-a lungul anilor 1820) ca un termen-cheie general, ce poate fi aplicat tuturor formelor de arta. Ce este specific utilizarii conceptului de situatie la Hegel este deschiderea oferita, ce a initiat o miscare cu destul de multa verva incat situatia, bazandu-se pe calitatea sa de categorie estetica in utilizarea proprie, sa poata fi dezvoltata dincolo de Hegel si dincolo de cadrul esteticii conventionale. Intrebarile pe care Hegel le-a ridicat asupra relatiei dintre reprezentare si actiune au condus la eterogenitatea practicilor artistice concrete in secolul al XX-lea de la reprezentarea situatiilor prin diverse stadii ale extinderii reprezentarii catre orgiastic la postulatul construirii situatiilor. Aceasta implica in primul rand intelegerea construirii de situatii ca prezent, ce se desfasoara si devine aici si acum, exact in planul imanentei capitalismului globalizat, in centrul societatii spectacolului, in mijlocul teritoriului a ceea ce incearca sa detroneze.
Prelegerea-seminar, optimista si incisiva, incurajeaza participantii sa refuze participarea in retetele obosite ale pietei si autoritatii si sa creeze in schimb metode de implicare noi si radicale. De la reprezentarea situatiilor la constructia de situatii incearca sa dezvolte un nou, indispensabil si comtemporan concept de schimbare politica. Un concept ce transcede formulele stereotipe ale insurectiei si rezistentei (resistance). Prea mult sange si prea multa cerneala a curs pentru ca masinaria artistica sa stea separata de cea revolutionara.
Cea mai importanta misune a artei este “sa descopere situatii interesante” (Hegel). Modelul politic alternativ al expozitiilor sau publicatiilor curatoriate poate transforma cercetatorul i.e. curatorul intr-un agent liber al unui nou discurs social si politic. Sau il putem cita pe Boris Groys: “Spatiul public creat de instalatie si de bienala, in special, poate sa fie un nou model de ordine politica”.

Razvan Ion (b. 1970) este teoretician, curator, manager cultural si activist politic. Este impreuna cu editor al PAVILION – journal for politics and culture, director al BUCHAREST BIENNALE – bienala internationala de arta contemporana Bucuresti, iar din 2008 a fost numit director al PAVILION UNICREDIT – centrul de arta si cultura contemporana. A tinut conferinte si prelegeri la diverse universitati si institutii de arta precum University of California, Berkeley; Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco, California; Facultatea de stiinte Politice Cluj; Academia de Arta, Timisoara;  La Casa Encedida, Madrid; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Universitatea din Lisabona, Universitatea din Londra. Scrie pentri diverse reviste si ziare, iar recent a curatoriat expozitia “Exploring the Return of Repression” la Pavilion, Bucuresti si rum46, Aarhus. in prezent lucreaza la volumele “Exploring the Return of Repression” si “Rhizomic Structures Of Art Institutions. Neo-Politics Of Culture”, ce urmeaza sa fie publicate in limba engleza. Urmatoarele sale proiecte curatoriale includ “Smash the Church! Smash the State!”, care dezbate problema anarhismului, activismului colectiv si a miscarilor socio-politice in arta contemporana, si “Disruptive Monsters: From Representing to Constructing Situations”, ce vor fi intinerate in 2011 in mai multe spatii europene. Din 2010 este profesor la Universitatea din Bucuresti. Traieste si lucreaza la Bucuresti.

Anne Barlow at 5th Bucharest Biennale 2012

The 5th Bucharest Biennale (Bucharest International Biennial for Contemporary Art), generated by PAVILION—journal for politics & culture—is set for 25 May – 22 July 2012, under the curatorship of Anne Barlow (UK/USA).

Anne Barlow, the Curator of Bucharest Biennale 5, will hold a press conference on the 21st of September 2010, at Art in General (79 Walker Street), New York, USA, at 6.00 PM.

bb5The Bucharest Biennale is interested in the link between creative practice and social development, and correspondences between local and global contexts. Now in its fifth year, the Biennale is building a strong partnership between Bucharest—in itself, a symbol of how the political can be reflected in every aspect of life—and Western Europe. The Biennale connects to a universal problem that transcends specific geographical or historical contexts, that of “resistance” in daily life. The Biennale is a structure that is able to transform the city itself into a site of ongoing activity, as well a field of action.

Fundamentally, European culture has been the result of exchange, sometimes peaceful, other times violent, that has taken place between neighbouring societies and different social groups within a given state. These horizontal and vertical forms of cultural exchange occurred in many different manners: through imitation, assimilation, dissimulation, appropriation, through either mutual understanding or hegemonic dominance. The Biennale aims to operate in a way that demonstrates sensitivity and competence in dealing with the “others” as the “alter” from different cultural backgrounds. With BB4 being covered by more than 120 publications and seen by 58,000 visitors, the Biennale is now regarded as one of the most vital biennials in Europe.  By appointing a European-American curator Bucharest Biennale will provide a link the between two cultures in a different way.

Anne Barlow (born in Glasgow, Scotland), the appointed Curator of BB5, is Executive Director of Art in General, New York. After receiving an M. A. in the History of Art at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Barlow acted as Curator of the Scottish Arts Council Collection of contemporary art (1989-1994) and Curator of Contemporary Art and Design at Glasgow Museums (1994-1999), where she managed a temporary exhibitions program, contemporary art and design collection, artists’ residencies, and new commissions. From 1999-2006, she was Curator of Education and Media Programs at the New Museum, New York, where she oversaw the scope of the museum’s educational and public programs; initiated and developed Museum as Hub, a global network initiative that connected the museum with international contemporary art partners in Cairo, Eindhoven, Mexico City and Seoul; organized inter-disciplinary roundtables with leaders in the fields of the visual arts, architecture, and design; and curated numerous exhibitions and performances. Independently, she also collaborated on the exhibition Copy It, Steal It, Share it at Borusan Art Gallery, Istanbul (2003), and guest-curated film and media projects for Threshold Artspace, Perth, Scotland (2007). Barlow has published for organizations including Liverpool University Press/Tate Gallery Liverpool; the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, United Kingdom; the Edith Russ House for Media Art, Oldenburg; the New Museum, New York; and Art in General. She was also a lecturer/ guest critic for organizations including the Royal College of Art, London; Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; MUMOK, Vienna; New York University; The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York; and Tate Modern, London.

The Assistant Curator to Anne Barlow will be Romanian Simina Neagu (b. 1988). Since 2009 Neagu has been working as Assistant Director at Pavilion UniCredit center for contemporary art and culture, and the Pavilion journal for politics and culture and Bucharest Biennale. She studied art history, curating, and art criticism at University of Bucharest and University of Arts, London. She collaborated with institutions such as the Romanian National Museum of Art, the Centre for Visual Introspection and Swedish Travelling Exhibitions. She is a regular contributor to the online platform sfere.ro, and is currently writing her thesis on Eastern European neo-avantgarde and preparing “Caution! Institutional Space!” exhibition.

The co-directors of Bucharest Biennale are Razvan Ion & Eugen Radescu.

Razvan Ion (b. 1970) is a theoretician, curator, cultural manager and political activist. He is the co-editor (with Eugen Radescu), of PAVILION – journal for politics and culture, co-director of BUCHAREST BIENNALE and in 2008 he was appointed director of PAVILION UNICREDIT- center for contemporary art & culture. He has lectured at venues including the University of California, Berkeley; Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco, California; Political Science Faculty, Cluj; Art Academy, Timisoara; La Casa Encedida, Madrid; and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon.. Ion writes for different magazines and newspapers, and recently curated “Exploring the Return of Repression” at Pavilion, Bucharest and rum46, Aarhus. He is now working on the book project “Exploring the Return of Repression” and his new curatorial project “Smash the Church! Smash the State!” dealing with anarchist and collective activism and social-political movements in art. His next curated exhibition, “Disruptive Monsters: From Representing to Constructing Situations, will be in 2011. From 2010 he will have classes in the University of Bucharest, Romania. Ion lives and works in Bucharest.

Eugen Radescu (b. 1978) is a politologist (specializing in moral relativism and political ethics), cultural manager, curator and theoretician. He is a professor at the Political Science Faculty in Bucharest and Cluj, Romania, and writes for various magazines and newspapers. Among other exhibitions, Radescu curated Bucharest Biennale 1 with the theme “Identity Factories” and “How Innocent Is That?” at Pavilion Bucharest. He is co-editor of PAVILION – journal for politics and culture and co-director of BUCHAREST BIENNALE (with Razvan Ion) and the chairman of the organizational board of PAVILION and BUCHAREST BIENNALE. He has lectured at venues including Art Academy, Timisoara; La Casa Encedida, Madrid; the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; and Apex Art, New York. He recently returned from a residency at Apex Art, New York, and published the book “How Innocent is That?” with Revolver Publishing, Berlin. He is also a professor at Political Science Faculty in Cluj, Romania. Radescu lives and works in Bucharest and is currently working on a new book on moral relativism.
